Last January the 28th, Prof. Xavier Querol’s (AIRUSE project leader) was invited to the Catalan Parliament, by the Territory and Sustainability Committee, to answer to a Parliament question: What are the consequences of exceeding the air quality limit values?
After an initial presentation from Prof. Querol, leaders from the different political parties intervened and presented their questions, which were answered at the end, again by Prof. Querol.
In the opening AIRUSE results on Barcelona air quality were presented, these included an assessment of the air quality parameters which are regulated by the EU Commission, as well as which of these parameters are currently exceeded in Barcelona. This translates into air quality degradation, with a direct impact on public health. Causes of these exceedances and possible mitigation actions were also presented.
In reply to the questions by the representatives from the different political parties, he highlighted the responsibility that the Administration has in achieving air quality improvements. Emphasis was given by all participants to awareness raising and education of the public regarding air quality issues.
To finalise, Prof. Querol reviewed potential mitigation strategies to be implemented in Barcelona and other Spanish cities, including those currently under evaluation within LIFE+ project AIRUSE. He also presented the positive impact these measures have had in European urban areas such as Berlin, London or Stockholm.
